Common Problems With Car Air Conditioning

Air conditioning used to be seen as something of a luxury in UK cars, but with summer temperatures getting warmer and traffic queues getting longer, it is now increasingly being seen as standard equipment.

As with any mechanical or electrical component in a vehicle, air conditioning units can go wrong, whether it’s the sudden failure of a key element or the results of wear and tear over years of usage. Ideally, if there’s a problem developing with your air conditioning, you want to catch it at the earliest opportunity before it develops into something that is going to be more expensive to put right.

In this article, the UK Tyres team is going to look at five common signs that there might be a problem with the air conditioning in your vehicle, together with what might be causing them and what you can do about it.

5 Signs Your Air Conditioning Isn’t Working Properly

  1. 1. My air conditioning is not blowing cold air

Perhaps the most important job your car air conditioning has is to keep you cool on a hot day – and if it’s just blowing out warm or even hot air, that’s going to be a problem. There are a number of possible causes, from low refrigerant levels or a damaged fan to electrical faults and problems with the condenser.

  1. 2. My air conditioning is putting out a bad smell

Staying cool is important, but it’s only one part of being comfortable as you drive – and a bad smell emitting from your air-con can be just as bad as getting too hot! This could be because your air filter has become clogged up with dirt or stagnant water, or it might be caused by accumulated mildew as a result of not using your air conditioning enough.

  1. 3. My air conditioning has a weak airflow

If your air conditioning is providing less cool air than it should, this could be a sign that your system has a leak, perhaps around the seals or hoses, or it could mean that the air filter has become blocked. A more serious possible cause might be a problem with the compressor.

  1. 4. My air conditioning is making rattling noises

New rattling noises coming from any working part of your car are never a good sign, and that applies to your air conditioning as much as anywhere else. Likely causes include a loose belt or perhaps a problem with the fan. Other unwanted noises to keep an ear out for include bubbling or hissing that could be down to a refrigerant leak.

  1. 5. My air conditioning is causing condensation

Condensation in your car can be caused by a number of things – faulty air conditioning included. Moisture on or around your dashboard is a common sign of the air-con being the source of the problem and can be caused by a blockage or perhaps a refrigerant leak.
